“Art and life collide in Nicole Klaymoon’s works of dance and documentary theater... With a wit that is sometimes poignant, sometimes lacerating, Klaymoon avoids polemic in pursuit of ambiguous, messy truths.”

Carla Escoda
KQED

Music of the Actualized Child interweaves street dance, documentary theater, live song, and video art to engage a critical conversation around the school-to-prison pipeline, childhood trauma, race, and healing. Shakti Butler’s new film, Healing Justice, serves as a springboard for visceral movement and musical invention, catalyzing an original work of documentary hip hop theater.

Embodiment Project is a San Francisco based street dance theater company founded by Artistic Director/Choreographer, Nicole Klaymoon in 2008. Embodiment Project’s Ancient Children was commissioned by YBCA and their Izzy Dance Award Winning show Chalk Outlines toured nationally and is regarded by SF Chronicle as “potent, powerful, epic dance theater”. Klaymoon was selected as one of KQED’s 2017 Women to Watch and is currently a resident artist at the ODC Theater, a recipient of the Headlands Center for the Arts residency, and the Gerbode and Hewlett Foundation’s Commissioning Choreographers Award.

This performance is supported in part by The MAP Fund, supported by The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
