Regional companies are offered commissioning, touring, national networking, and performance opportunities over 3 years.
The Artist in Residence Program at ODC Theater offers a crucial intermediary step for those artists arriving at mid-career status. These artists bring wonderful expression, variety, and quality to our city’s cultural life. ODC Theater’s residency is marked by three distinguishing characteristics:
1) Commitment to artistic development, professional sustainability, and infrastructural development for the companies we support;
2) Significant fundraising efforts for selected projects;
3) Long-range advocacy for works created at ODC in markets outside the Bay Area.
The Artist in Residence Program makes selected artists eligible for the following career advancement opportunities designed by ODC Theater in collaboration with funders and presenters nationwide:
• SCUBA. A multi-city touring circuit created by ODC, Velocity Dance Center in Seattle, and the Southern Theater in the Minneapolis. SCUBA now includes Philadelphia Dance Projects. One resident artist per year is selected by panel for this national touring opportunity.
• The Director’s Fund. A new works initiative offering $5,000- $10,000 in cash commissions at the discretion of the ODC Theater Director. The Fund is supported generously by a gift from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and gifts from over 100 private investors.
• Regional Dance Development Initiative (RDDI). ODC is the hub-site for this program of New England Foundation for the Arts / National Dance Project. RDDI is a comprehensive artist lab, linking emerging artists in traditional and culturally specific forms with artistic, financial, and administrative support from established practitioners at the region and national tier.
• ODC Theater Presents. Each year selected resident artists are commissioned to make new work which premieres during the presenting season.
• Creative space. Resident artists are allotted 50 hours of fully subsidized space in which to rehearse and create.
