Headmistress and Lionel Popkin | Garrett + Moulton Productions | Chitresh Das Dance Company | Amy O’Neal and Doug Elkins Choreography, Etc. | Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre | Special Guest Wendy Perron

ODC’s annual fringe-style festival returns for a third year with samplings of contemporary dance from around the nation. Each double bill offers a provocative pairing curated to spark conversation. Whether it’s raw physicality, cinematic tableaus, or unexpected props, each performance is certain to offer the ephemeral, visceral thrills that only live dance can provide. The programming showcases many of the artists' most celebrated works, offering a second chance to see a hot ticket or a perfect first taste of a choreographer who’s new to you. Join us for a weekend of dance, zipping back and forth between shows and enjoying conversation with fellow arts enthusiasts.

Program A:
Friday, May 30, 2014 7:30pm
Headmistress
Lionel Popkin

How do we interpret identity, and what shapes our perceptions? Beloved San Francisco-based Headmistress and renowned Los Angeles-based choreographer Lionel Popkin create a juxtaposed conversation about art, identity, and perception in Program A. Headmistress' two solos (one traveling), including an excerpt from a work-in-progress titled Mongrels and Objects. Popkin's highly anticipated West Coast premiere of Ruth Doesn't Live Here Anymore is inspired by the career of modern dance pioneer and devotee of "The Oriental," Ruth St. Denis.

Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre - Mission Bowling Club Saturday, May 31 2014 3pm and 9:30 FREE

Los Angeles-based Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre will perform the site-specific Bowling Blues at Mission Bowling Club, which integrates live music by multi-instrumentalist Claire Gignac and athletic choreography by Duckler.

Program B:
Saturday, May 31, 2014 4pm
Garrett + Moulton Productions
Chitresh Das Dance Company

Program B restages outstanding works by two of the Bay Area's most cherished companies, Garrett + Moulton Productions and Chitresh Das Dance Company, both of whom make sophisticated and sometimes surprising use of live music. Garrett + Moulton will perform Show of Hands to original music by Bay Area composer Dan Becker played live by the Friction Quartet. Rachna Nivas, principal member of Chitresh Das Dance Company, will perform her own choreography in Bhakti, a solo based on the life of Hindu mystic Meerabai. An ensemble of four musicians accompanies the performance, goading Nivas to greater heights of virtuosity.

Program C:
Saturday, May 31 2014 7:30pm
Amy O’Neal
Doug Elkins Choreography, Etc.

Program C pairs two choreographers with a foundation in hip-hop forms. Amy O'Neal will perform the Bay Area premiere of The Most Innovative, Daring, and Original Piece of Dance/Performance You Will See This Decade, in which she addresses topics such as self-promotion, the culture of hype, and the racial and sexual stereotypes that are tacitly marshaled in their support. Former B-Boy Doug Elkins makes his Bay Area debut at WDDF-SF. The award-winning New York artist brings a company of six dancers to ODC to perform Hapless Bizarre, a "romantic" work combining physical comedy with set choreography.
