“House of Matter was one of the most rocking, joyous dance theater pieces that hit the town in a long time.” - SF Bay Guardian

“Jazz vocalist Valerie Troutt is unquestionably one of the best songwriters around.”
- East Bay Express

Embodiment Project was selected as one of the Bay Area’s “ten companies and artists who challenged expectations or unveiled surprises… in 2012.”  -  SF Bay Guardian

“Choreographer and performer d. Sabela grimes may be the Los Angeles dance world's best-kept secret.  -  Los Angeles Times

“You can have a first encounter with an artist who pushes you right to the edge of your seat… such was the case with Nicole Klaymoon.”  - SF Bay Guardian

House of Matter uproots traditional notions gender, power, and manhood through high-energy street dance, live music, spoken word, theater, and interactive video. Featuring critically acclaimed Los Angeles choreo-poet d. Sabela Grimes, legendary Oakland vocalist Gina Breedlove, nine-piece band MoonCandy, and original compositions by singer/songwriter Valerie Troutt, House of Matter electrifies, provokes, and mobilizes!

Struggling to embody womanist values, House of Matter's protagonist journeys through the rooms of a man’s house, exposing the pitfalls of masculinity in contemporary culture. An episodic collage, the narrator and dancers propel and weave their individual stories through their movement, grounded in street dance and made cohesive through modern dance and physical theater. MoonCandy’s five vocalists and four musicians create original house music; the style’s signature ‘looping’ becomes a potent incantation spellbinding the audience.

An up-and-coming dance company, Embodiment Project celebrates poetic and poignant integration of modern dance, house dance, spoken-word, humor, and song to express personal and political narratives. As part of the new generation of artists working in street dance forms, artistic director Nicole Klaymoon’s nuanced comedic timing, biting social commentary, and eco-feminist values bridge what has been a long-standing divide between modern and street dance.
