The Intimate Geography of Your Dancing Body
discovering the internal terrains of the human body in motion

July 12 - 20, 12:30pm - 4:30pm

Tuition: $275. To register, contact the ODC Dance Commons front desk at 415-863-9830 x100.

Holly Johnston leads a workshop for dancers, choreographers, educators and athletes who desire to learn more about the internal structures, physiological systems of the body that support kinetic movement, along with investigating what communication is through non-verbal, non-vocal human action as it intends artistic expression.

Each day begins with a 2 hour movement technique class that challenges the body’s muscular, skeletal, respiratory, and nervous systems. Following a small break, the final 1.5 hours of the day will be spent on the analysis of each individual’s personal “body geography.” We will discuss where in the individual’s body they express strength and stability, and then identify where there are vulnerabilities and weaknesses in coordinating the systems of the body to work effectively. The goal of the workshop is to support resourcing the human being with knowledge that promotes the body’s limitless capacity to respond to one’s physical, mental and emotional demands and aspirations. The workshop incorporates Johnston’s movement vocabulary as a foundation for technique class using Kinesiology and Physics to support learning about some foundational principles of the human body in motion, with conscious intent and full agency.

Johnston will be joined by Research Assistants, Elizabeth Chitty & Mackenzey Franklin, who will work intimately with participants to offer personalized information that is relevant to the individual. Chitty, Franklin and Johnston have been working together as a collaborative team to develop workshops in “Integrated Functional Kinetics/Capacity Expansion Techniques” which are movement techniques and somatic practices that support longevity and perseverance for those who pursue life through fierce physical expression.
