ODC Summer Contemporary Workshop series Immerse, invigorate, Investigate
Technique and Repertory Workshop with RAWdance Intermediate/Advanced Dancers June 4 - 8 12pm - 3pm
Tuition: $175. To register, contact the ODC Dance Commons front desk at 415-863-9830 x100.
Learn RAWdance repertory and technique from Artistic Directors Wendy Rein and Ryan T. Smith with RAWdance company members. Material will focus on exploring the potential of muscular tension and release, the chemistry of partnering and sharing space, and expanding movement through elasticity and breath, without sacrificing clarity and precision. Each day will begin with a 45 minute technique warm-up, followed by diving into phrase work representative of RAWdance’s detailed and architectural movement style, and creating some of your own. The week will culminate in a short open performance. Dancers who are interested in future performance opportunities with the company are encouraged to attend the workshop.
After years of collaboration both as dance partners and choreographers, Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein formed RAWdance with a mission to expose the intimate core of our relationships and identities. Criticaldance.com described RAWdance's most recent performance as "visionary dance at its best." SF Weekly has described the company's work as “edgy, sexy inventive fare designed to speak to audiences.” RAWdance is currently in residence at ODC Theater and has been supported through previous residencies at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Jon Sims Center for the Arts and CounterPULSE. In 2010, the company was awarded a Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) award, a project of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company. RAWdance’s directors have been guest artists at Brown and San Francisco State Universities, and have taught workshops locally for professionals and beginners. In the last three years, the company has toured to Singapore, Chicago, IL, Providence, RI, Washington DC, and New York, NY, in addition to performances throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. RAWdance is currently developing an 8 hour dance performance installation in SF’s UN Plaza for 24 dancers in late June 2012.
