3:30pm - 5:30pm

Damage Control Dance Theater, in collaboration with author Francesca Lia Block, will create a dance theater adaptation of Block's 2006 Novel, "Psyche In a Dress." We are looking for a cast of experienced male and female dancers and performers. Dancers must be raw, fierce, funky, fearless, honest and committed; as well as possessing creativity, collaborative spirit, a great sense of humor and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

This will be an experimental process. We will be building these characters from the text together, growing the movement and stage world together, and creating a world from Ms. Block's beautiful book (with her collaboration and guidance), as a team. Dancers must be committed and willing to take a high degree of ownership in the work.

Dancers with Theater experience are highly encouraged to attend. If you have skills in: Jazz, Ballet, Belly dance, Contemporary, Modern, Hip Hop, Afro-Caribbean, Lockin, Boogaloo, Tango, or just something crazy we've never seen before, we want to see you. We are seeking, at minimum, 6 males and 8 females.

Please note audition starts promptly at 3:30pm and latecomers will not be admitted.

Damage Control Dance Theater (DCDT) likes to say that we create folkloric dance within a modern dance idiom and with an eye toward theatricality, staging, cohesiveness, and a western compositional aesthetic. So whether the movement is Bellydance, Pop n' lock, Indian, or Contemporary, we're reaching into the belly of the beat and coming up with a vocabulary that's raw, primal, visceral, and true for us. DCDT has performed at venues including Dance Mission Theater, Cowell Theater, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Hybrid (NYC), the Def West Theater (LA), the LA Convention Center (LA), and have toured and performed to sold-out houses in Paris and Barcelona. DCDT is constantly seeking to break ground, challenge barriers, and create safe space for deep personal exploration within dance.

Cera Byer (choreographer/director), holds a degree in Dance from SFSU, and has taught at high schools, studios, workshops, and retreats around the US & abroad. Her technical approach comes from continuing exhaustive exploration into Graham, Horton, and Dunham techniques, alongside Kathak, Persian, Belly dance, Hip Hop, Funk, and Afro-Caribbean traditions, but her choreography is anything but a dry academic approach to fusion. Cera's choreography focuses on alignment, strength, isolations, fluidity, moving off balance, musical interpretation, ferocious honesty, and blistering performance quality but, when feet hit the floor, it's a sexy-hardcore-hoedown, and everyone's invited. Cera owns and operates Shoebox Studio in San Francisco and is the founder and director of Damage Control Dance Theater.
