How We Built It – ODC's Building the Future Campaign

Building the Future
Back in 2002, ODC launched the Building the Future Campaign to triple our facilities. The idea was to provide more space for our own programs and to create an environment where professionals, emerging artists, and students could interact with, influence, and inspire one another. We are delighted that our new 23,000 sq-ft building is now open, offering the Bay Area performing arts community a place to call home.

ODC Dance Commons features classrooms for training, studios for creating, a Pilates center for strengthening, a Town Hall for gathering, and a Healthy Dancers Clinic for promoting wellness. With this facility up and running, we are swinging into action on Phase Two of our project – renovation of our existing Theater space.

The Financial Goal
Thanks to numerous individual and institutional donors, we have raised $10MM of our $18MM campaign goal. The money raised so far built the ODC Dance Commons. The remainder of the campaign funds, once raised, will be applied to:

  • Renovation design and construction of the existing ODC Theater
  • $1MM Building Maintenance Fund
  • $1.5MM Artistic Venture Fund – to ensure the creation of new work over a 10 year period

Join In the Effort
We are endlessly grateful to those who have helped us achieve the first step towards our dream of a thriving community arts center. If you are interested in lending your support and becoming part of this unique union between arts and community, please contact Gianna Shepard, Development Associate by phone (415.863.6606 x106) or via email (development@odcdance.org).

A Bit of Background
ODC was founded in 1971 as the Oberlin Dance Collective. Today, under the leadership of Artistic Director and Founder Brenda Way, ODC is an international arts organization with deep roots in the community. It is comprised of a world class contemporary dance company, a community theater/presenting organization, and a school for professional and recreational dancers (ages 3 through adult). Operating in San Francisco’s Mission District since 1976, ODC’s programs create access to contemporary art-making for more than 6,000 artists and students and 40,000 audience members annually. Although we have come a long way from our early days as a small artists’ collective, artistic excellence, mentorship, diversity, and connection to community remain the guiding principles.
