Contact Improvisation for Dancers and Performers

This class series will draw upon Contact Improvisation's roots as a performance project and review the skills and techniques that this form has brought to us over the last 45 years.

Our training and investigation intends to expand our partnering vocabulary and to help us safely improvise in a fast-paced dynamic environment.  Dancers will be offered the somatic and architectural tools to know how to lift and how to be lifted regardless of size and strength. We will explore the possibilities made available by the foundation of trust that comes from knowing when our partner is self-preserving, reliably present and supportive.

Through focused investigation, rigorous skill building and sweaty play, we will hone our sensitivity, awareness and presence in this eternal dancing moment.

René Alvarez (Oakland, CA) began to study Contact Improvisation (CI) in 2000 at the 848 community space in San Francisco. René was then living and performing with the Infinite Kaos collective out of their warehouse event space in the Tenderloin. The subsequent 17 years have been dedicated to a deep immersion and investigation into CI.  Inspired by the teachings of Sara Shelton Mann, Nita Little, Nancy Stark Smith, Scott Wells, Ray Chung, Karen Nelson, and many others, René continues to practice, study, teach, organize, host, curate, play, and dance CI.
